# How to check if a USDT address is frozen

**Short answer.** An address is "frozen" when Tether adds it to the blacklist of the USDT contract on TRON. You can check this on-chain: the contract exposes the status and emits an event when an address is added or removed. A checker reads the same data for you.

## What does "frozen" mean for a USDT address?

Tether's terms allow it to freeze tokens and to blacklist an address that holds them ([Tether Legal](https://tether.to/en/legal/)). On TRON the blacklist lives in the USDT contract `TR7NHqjeKQxGTCi8q8ZY4pL8otSzgjLj6t`, so the status is public and anyone can read it.

## How do I check it?

1. Copy the full address (it starts with `T` and has 34 characters).
2. Paste it into the [checker](/tools/usdt-trc20-checker/). It reads the contract's blacklist status through our own TRON node.

## Why can a clean-looking address be frozen later?

The blacklist changes over time. A check shows the state at the moment of the request only, so repeat it before you rely on the result. BlockSec counted 4,163 unique addresses frozen on Ethereum and Tron in 2025 and 150 removed from the blacklist within the year ([BlockSec](https://blocksec.com/blog/1-26-billion-frozen-usdt-blacklisting-on-ethereum-and-tron-in-2025)).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I see a frozen address without a tool?

Yes. The status and the add/remove events are public on the USDT contract.

### Does a check prove the address is safe?

No. It shows the Tether blacklist status and OFAC matches at that moment. It is not AML scoring.

### Is my address stored when I check it?

No. See the methodology for how the check is processed.

### How often does the status change?

Without a schedule: Tether adds and removes addresses at its discretion, so check again before each large transfer.
