# USDT frozen: what to do

**Short answer.** If your USDT is frozen, only the issuer, Tether, can change that; nobody else can unfreeze it for you. Confirm the status on-chain, collect the transaction history and write to Tether support. Anyone who offers to "unfreeze" USDT for a fee is almost certainly a scammer.

## How do I confirm that the USDT is really frozen?

Check the address in the [checker](/tools/usdt-trc20-checker/). A failed transfer alone does not prove a freeze: it can also be an energy or fee problem.

## Who can unfreeze it?

Only Tether controls the blacklist of its contract. Its terms describe freezing and blacklisting but define no formal appeal process ([Tether Legal](https://tether.to/en/legal/)); the support contact is [cs.tether.to](https://cs.tether.to/). Removal does happen: BlockSec counted 150 removed addresses in 2025 ([BlockSec](https://blocksec.com/blog/1-26-billion-frozen-usdt-blacklisting-on-ethereum-and-tron-in-2025)). It is not guaranteed.

## Warning: "unfreezers" are scams

No exchange, wallet or "hacker" can remove an address from the Tether blacklist. Do not pay anyone for unfreezing, do not share your seed phrase or private key, do not sign unknown transactions and do not install "unlock" apps. Contact Tether only through its official site.

## What if the freeze is linked to a sanction?

A blocked asset under US sanctions can be unblocked only with authorization from OFAC ([OFAC FAQ 646](https://ofac.treasury.gov/faqs/646)). In that case talk to a lawyer; this guide is not legal advice.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can a third party unfreeze my USDT?

No. Only Tether can change its contract's blacklist. Offers from anyone else are scams.

### Will the frozen funds be returned?

It is not guaranteed. BlockSec reports both removals (150 in 2025) and destruction of funds ($698.42M) (BlockSec).

### Is it safe to send a small amount to see if it works?

Do not send anything to anyone who contacts you about unfreezing. Verify the status yourself on-chain.

### Where do I get help?

Official Tether support at cs.tether.to, and a lawyer for legal questions.
